What Are Wild Cards in a Domain?

| DOMAIN NAME | July 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Wild cards have been in use for years as a way to re-direct errant search terms to the proper website or to return the right results that people are looking for.

The use of wild cards in your domain name takes care of mistyped domain names like such as

www.domain.com or www.domane.comWith the emphasis in education moving away from proper spelling, you need wild cards in order to capture your target audience. They catch any errant user by employing a splat (asterisk) to match characters. The wild card is automatically matched when the domain typed in does not exist and directs the inquiry back to your site.

Wild cards can also be used in meta-tagging to take care of misspelled search terms. For instance, someone may be looking for “affiliate programs” but type “afilate pogams” into the search engine. By using a splat in your meta-tags, search engines will apply the misspellings to your tags and direct the web surfer to your site.

Essentially, you can use any keyword in your third level domain. That is, your pages other than your main page will be able to be accessed whether or not a search term is misspelled or awkwardly phrased. A search phrase for “insurance nrth dokota” will return a link to your page about insurance in the state of North Dakota if you make use of wild cards and have a page about that subject.

What Is Domain Leasing and How Can It Help Me?

| DOMAIN NAME | July 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Whether you are just starting an internet business or want to give your existing business a boost, domain leasing may be a great option for you to increase both your traffic and your sales. Leasing a domain is similar to leasing an office building; your customers don’t know that it’s not your personal property but just assume that it is yours. Domain leasing is very similar to leasing physical real estate.

There are hundreds of domains whose owners have let them sit unused until the concept of leasing came along. First, the domain owners import their domains into a leasing system. Advertisers browse through the offerings and find the best domains for their businesses. An advertiser with a website that deals with shoes would look for a domain that describes his business as closely as possible, not one with a URL like skatermadness.ca. When he comes across the domain shoefrenzy.ca he might choose that one to lease or he might browse

How to Back Order Domains

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

When you back order domains it is rather like going to the library for a book that you really want to read. The library has only one copy so you put your name on a list and hope that the person who borrowed the book doesn’t renew it but turns it in on time so that you can read it. If they do, you are first in line and you’ll be notified that you have first dibs on that book. If not, perhaps you’ll settle for a book with a similar subject matter.

Back ordering domains is much like the example of the library. Not everyone renews their domain name for a variety of reasons. Perhaps their business did not take off as they had planned due to bad marketing or lack of attention. Maybe they have decided to concentrate on another domain that is more profitable for them or they may just not be able to afford the renewal fee. Whatever the reason, the domain will be available as soon as they either give it up or fail to make their renewal payment.

About 3 hours after it’s deleted from the database, a domain is available to someone else to register. However, it’s very difficult for an individual to grab that domain the moment it is available; as soon as it’s deleted from the database you have to wait for it to “drop”. Unless you have a way to know the precise moment it becomes available, your chances of getting that domain are slim to none. That’s why people back order domains and depend on experienced professionals to retrieve the domain they want.

What is the Life Cycle of a Domain Name?

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

The life cycle of a domain, just like a living creature, goes through periods of growth, stagnation and decline. A savvy webmaster can manipulate these cycles to his or her advantage if they can carefully watch and recognize trends and compensate for them.

For instance, let’s say that Greg registers his domain name in 2009. He chooses a domain name that describes his business of selling gambling machines, [www.] [lucky13] dot com. He carefully builds his domain with interesting content and useful links and around the one year mark receives a notice of renewal. Business has been great so he has no problem renewing his domain.

Conversely, if you do not pay your renewal and your domain expires you will run into some trouble. The registrar will put a hold on your domain and your website and email will quit working. At this point it’s not hopeless; you can still renew for the usual price but you cannot transfer it to any other interested parties without first renewing it. If you don’t renew within forty days the domain will be deleted and it will be quite costly to restore it.

If you still cannot renew or recover your domain your next step is to wait for it to be dropped from the registry. Of course, at that point anyone can apply for your domain’s name and if it is particularly valuable the chances of your getting it back are very slim. It will be grabbed almost as soon as it is dropped.

When Should I Use Domain Escrow Services?

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

Domain escrow services are a fairly new development when it comes to buying and selling domains. They afford protection to both buyer and seller and prevent misunderstandings as well as fraudulent practices. You may intend to use your domain to promote a cause or hobby you are passionate about or to generate or supplement an income. Either way, it is important to protect your domain just as you would any physical property you are considering buying.

You should use these services each and every time you purchase a domain. Your domain is where you live and work virtually, like your home in cyberspace. When you buy a domain you need to protect it as you would a piece of real property you plan to move into. How many times have you heard of someone buying a piece of property only to learn that there are significant back taxes owed or liens on the property? A domain can have the same problems, unfortunately.

Domain escrow services are third parties that handle the financial aspects of the purchase and sometimes other services as well. The buyer gives the funds to the service, which puts it in a special account to hold until they receive the authorization code for the domain. Once the buyer is given the code and activates the domain with no problems, the seller receives the funds. Much like an escrow service for a real-world property, both buyer and seller are protected against fraud.
