Bluehost hosting review

| REVIEWS | November 23, 2011

what-is-web-hosting

I was excited to write a review about BlueHost, mainly because I’ve heard a lot of good things about them. With so many web hosts, and so few (good and honest) reviews, it’s really hard to tell who’s good and who isn’t.

From looking at the BlueHost.com web site, the company appears to be a serious and professional web host. A visually appealing web site, clearly posted contact information, lots of awards (from legitimate places), and grammatically correct text on site, all help make BlueHost seem like a formidable web host. A great feature (that seems to be awfully rare) is that BlueHost provides a demo of their control panel (a very slightly customized cPanel using the X skin) that actually works and isn’t impossible to find. It’s a great feature that allows you to review how cPanel works if you aren’t familiar with it.

Hostgator hosting review

hostgator

HostGator is a U.S based hosting company established in 2002. Created by Brent Oxely, the company has their servers located in Texas.

Though the beginning was quite humble, HostGator has become one among the best web hosting companies in the world. At first glance, you might take HostGator for any other web hosting services, However, you would certainly be in for a surprise when you begin learning about the various features and services they offer.

There is an answer for every call of yours, replies to your e-mails, instant response whenever you want to chat, quality hosting and affordable plans. These are just a handful from the ocean of their services which we would be reviewing in detail.

Google Seeks Celebrities to Sign Up With Google+

| REVIEWS | August 26, 2011

posts-150x102

You got to hand it to Google. Strictly speaking percentages, Google+ has netted more members in its three week existence than Facebook has added every week since its inception nearly seven years ago. With ten million users and counting, Google hopes their new social network takes off as the Pepsi to Facebook’s Coca-Cola. That’s a level of competition that Facebook hasn’t felt since Myspace quietly slipped away from the scene over the last few years. But it’s going to take more than popularity-hounds and tech lovers to keep Google+ growing fast enough to catch up to Facebook’s 750 million member army. One of Google’s tactics is neither original nor unexpected nor foolish: get celebrities to make profiles.

What Are Wild Cards in a Domain?

| DOMAIN NAME | July 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Wild cards have been in use for years as a way to re-direct errant search terms to the proper website or to return the right results that people are looking for.

The use of wild cards in your domain name takes care of mistyped domain names like such as

www.domain.com or www.domane.comWith the emphasis in education moving away from proper spelling, you need wild cards in order to capture your target audience. They catch any errant user by employing a splat (asterisk) to match characters. The wild card is automatically matched when the domain typed in does not exist and directs the inquiry back to your site.

Wild cards can also be used in meta-tagging to take care of misspelled search terms. For instance, someone may be looking for “affiliate programs” but type “afilate pogams” into the search engine. By using a splat in your meta-tags, search engines will apply the misspellings to your tags and direct the web surfer to your site.

Essentially, you can use any keyword in your third level domain. That is, your pages other than your main page will be able to be accessed whether or not a search term is misspelled or awkwardly phrased. A search phrase for “insurance nrth dokota” will return a link to your page about insurance in the state of North Dakota if you make use of wild cards and have a page about that subject.

What Is Domain Leasing and How Can It Help Me?

| DOMAIN NAME | July 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Whether you are just starting an internet business or want to give your existing business a boost, domain leasing may be a great option for you to increase both your traffic and your sales. Leasing a domain is similar to leasing an office building; your customers don’t know that it’s not your personal property but just assume that it is yours. Domain leasing is very similar to leasing physical real estate.

There are hundreds of domains whose owners have let them sit unused until the concept of leasing came along. First, the domain owners import their domains into a leasing system. Advertisers browse through the offerings and find the best domains for their businesses. An advertiser with a website that deals with shoes would look for a domain that describes his business as closely as possible, not one with a URL like skatermadness.ca. When he comes across the domain shoefrenzy.ca he might choose that one to lease or he might browse

How to Back Order Domains

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

When you back order domains it is rather like going to the library for a book that you really want to read. The library has only one copy so you put your name on a list and hope that the person who borrowed the book doesn’t renew it but turns it in on time so that you can read it. If they do, you are first in line and you’ll be notified that you have first dibs on that book. If not, perhaps you’ll settle for a book with a similar subject matter.

Back ordering domains is much like the example of the library. Not everyone renews their domain name for a variety of reasons. Perhaps their business did not take off as they had planned due to bad marketing or lack of attention. Maybe they have decided to concentrate on another domain that is more profitable for them or they may just not be able to afford the renewal fee. Whatever the reason, the domain will be available as soon as they either give it up or fail to make their renewal payment.

About 3 hours after it’s deleted from the database, a domain is available to someone else to register. However, it’s very difficult for an individual to grab that domain the moment it is available; as soon as it’s deleted from the database you have to wait for it to “drop”. Unless you have a way to know the precise moment it becomes available, your chances of getting that domain are slim to none. That’s why people back order domains and depend on experienced professionals to retrieve the domain they want.

What is the Life Cycle of a Domain Name?

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

The life cycle of a domain, just like a living creature, goes through periods of growth, stagnation and decline. A savvy webmaster can manipulate these cycles to his or her advantage if they can carefully watch and recognize trends and compensate for them.

For instance, let’s say that Greg registers his domain name in 2009. He chooses a domain name that describes his business of selling gambling machines, [www.] [lucky13] dot com. He carefully builds his domain with interesting content and useful links and around the one year mark receives a notice of renewal. Business has been great so he has no problem renewing his domain.

Conversely, if you do not pay your renewal and your domain expires you will run into some trouble. The registrar will put a hold on your domain and your website and email will quit working. At this point it’s not hopeless; you can still renew for the usual price but you cannot transfer it to any other interested parties without first renewing it. If you don’t renew within forty days the domain will be deleted and it will be quite costly to restore it.

If you still cannot renew or recover your domain your next step is to wait for it to be dropped from the registry. Of course, at that point anyone can apply for your domain’s name and if it is particularly valuable the chances of your getting it back are very slim. It will be grabbed almost as soon as it is dropped.

When Should I Use Domain Escrow Services?

| DOMAIN NAME | April 1, 2011

posts-150x102

Domain escrow services are a fairly new development when it comes to buying and selling domains. They afford protection to both buyer and seller and prevent misunderstandings as well as fraudulent practices. You may intend to use your domain to promote a cause or hobby you are passionate about or to generate or supplement an income. Either way, it is important to protect your domain just as you would any physical property you are considering buying.

You should use these services each and every time you purchase a domain. Your domain is where you live and work virtually, like your home in cyberspace. When you buy a domain you need to protect it as you would a piece of real property you plan to move into. How many times have you heard of someone buying a piece of property only to learn that there are significant back taxes owed or liens on the property? A domain can have the same problems, unfortunately.

Domain escrow services are third parties that handle the financial aspects of the purchase and sometimes other services as well. The buyer gives the funds to the service, which puts it in a special account to hold until they receive the authorization code for the domain. Once the buyer is given the code and activates the domain with no problems, the seller receives the funds. Much like an escrow service for a real-world property, both buyer and seller are protected against fraud.

The Most Frequently Used Domain Names on the Internet Today

| DOMAIN NAME | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Sure, everyone thinks of.COM when they’re looking to buy a domain name, but the problem is that most of the good ones are taken. A lot of the big registrars are marketing other top level domains like.INFO,.ME,.WS (for website) or now,.CO (for COmpany or COrporation) as alternatives.

But just how popular are those domains anyway? Is it worth getting the.NET or the.ORG if the.COM you want is already taken? Will people take you seriously if your business website ends with some obscure extension? (like.TK which you can get for absolutely free.)

Is it worth getting a domain hack (where you use other domain extensions to spell your domain name)?

Del.icio.us is a classic example of a domain hack which uses.US for the States. (Del.icio.us now points to Delicious.com).

More and more country codes are getting used as alternatives to.COM domain endings. For example, people use.ME (Montenegro) for personal sites. Several radio and music sites use.AM (Armenia),.FM (Federated States of Micronesia),.CD (Congo) and.DJ (Djibouti).

We used Google as a benchmark to see how popular certain domain extensions were. Sure, the numbers change based on which Google data center you use and when you do the search, but you get an idea for which domain extensions are more popular: There are 14 billion.COM domain names listed in Google and around 230 million.INFO domain names. Does it really matter if the numbers are off by a couple of million in this case?)

Domain Names – The Conflicts Inevitable?

| DOMAIN NAME | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

It is very important for an organization in the rising era of cyber world to have a place in the cyberspace. This would require its registration under a particular domain name and website. As each computer has its own unique all-numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address and it’s very complex to remember all numeric addresses which has given rise to the essence of Domain Name System (in brief: DNS). Thus, the systematization of recognition of the proxy names is called the “Domain Name System”. Domain Names are virtually taking place of trademarks because consumers often perceive them as performing, in electronic commerce, much the same role as trademarks and trade-names have played in more traditional modes of business. Similar to the concept of trademarks disputes had arisen between the companies wanted to adopt the same domain name. As in the case of domain name only one owner can possess a particular domain name. In contrast, identical trademarks may be owned by numerous persons at a time till they have some sort of differentiation, which mark them off from each other. Under the current Internet system, one of the companies will not be able to include its trade mark in its domain name, since there can be only one domain name.

The original role of a domain name was no doubt to provide an address for computers on the internet. But the internet has developed from a mere means of communication to a mode of carrying on commercial activity. With the in crease of commercial activity on the internet, a domain name is also used as a business identifier. Therefore, the domain name not only serves as an address for internet communication but also identifies the specific internet site. In the commercial field, each domain name owner provides information services, which are associated with such domain name. Thus a domain name may pertain to provision of services within the meaning of Section 2(z) of the Trade Marks Act. A domain name is easy to remember and use, and is chosen as an instrument of commercial enterprise not only because it facilitates the ability of consumers to navigate the Internet to find websites they are looking for, but also at the same time, serves to identify and distinguish the business itself, or its goods or services, and to specify its corresponding online Internet location. Consequently a domain name as an address must, of necessity, be peculiar and unique and where a domain name is used in connection with a business, the value of maintaining an exclusive identity becomes critical.

Domain Names for Sale – What’s the Catch?

| DOMAIN NAME | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

We’re starting a few more blogs and websites, so we’re in the market for some decent domain names. This time, we thought we’d check out some of the lists of domain names for sale, instead of trying to coming up with new domain names.

The problem with domain names that are on sale is that they’re more expensive than buying a regular, new domain name.

If you can come up with a good, new domain name that hasn’t been registered yet, it should cost you around $10 per year. If you need to buy a domain name that someone else is re-selling, then the initial asking price can be considerably higher. (But, after you buy the domain name, it will only cost $10 per year, or whatever your domain registrar charges.)

What does Domain Names for Sale mean?

When you see lists of domain names that are on sale, it means that either

  1. Someone owns the domain name and is now trying to re-sell it (premium domain name)
  2. Someone bought the domain name, let it expire, and the domain name is now getting re-sold (expired domain name).

If you’re the only person trying to buy that domain name on sale, then you’re in luck. You just need to meet the minimum (reserve) price and it’s yours. But chances are several people are trying to buy that domain name (especially if it’s a popular domain name or a one word .com domain name). These domain names usually get sold on auction to the highest bidder.

The Domain Name Business – A Quick Guide

| DOMAIN NAME | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

Domains names are more than just a useful address for storing and showing business or personal information on the internet, they can bee the difference between a successful and non successful business.

Selecting the right domain name, hosting provider and website design, plus website development is not a small job.

The domain name market

A study of internet businesses showed that most of them spend less than 2 hours choosing their domain name, web hosting providers or doing a detailed plan of their website requirements. This can only lead to problem later on in the website development process and could cost you a lot of money.

The report also said that 45% of those businesses thought that they had chosen the wrong domain name and could increase sale with a better name. No surprise there when they are putting less time into the decision than they do deciding on the venue for the office xmas party. Using domain names that are complex and too long for your customers to remember and you will miss out on traffic and valuable business emails.

Estibot Review

| REVIEWS | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

You might have thought that this review is about Estibot.com getting better and better, but it isn’t. It is about my experience which I had with Estibot in 2 months. I’ll talk about advantages and disadvantages I found at the site during that time.

I have started using Estibot for free, which gave me only some features, such as 50 domain appraisals per day and couple domain idea generating per day. I liked it, though I saw couple major problems in it. Still, I decided to pay $50 for “Domainer Pro Exclusive” membership. I thought that it will help me to find more worthy domains. Let’s check out what Estibot offers for that $50. I’ll talk only about things that I tried.

1. Domain name appraiser.

This is the tool why Estibot is so popular. It suggests You the price of Your domain. Well, after using Estibot for two months I saw that You have to use technique to correct it’s suggestions. Let’s take not premium domain like Mafia-Wars.net for example. Estibot writes that it is worth about $3,400. Why is it writing this? Well, MafiaWars.com was sold for $31,103, keywords are the same – “Mafia Wars”. Is it really worth $3,400? The answer is no. My domain Mafia-Wars.net is hyphenated domain and this drops down my domain quality and worth, but Estibot don’t care about that hyphen and it still thinks that it’s the same domain as MafiaWars.net. That’s really not the right suggestion, hyphen is cutting off domains worth about 10 times, so this means that my domain Mafia-Wars.net is worth only about $340, not $3,400. Same happens with almost any other not premium domain, if Estibot says that it’s worth $10,000, You should ask no more than 50% of Estibot’s appraisal for it. I saw that one guy is selling domain Stylist.info, at DnForum.com couple people appraised it for $500-$800. What does say Estibot? It says $2,000. Couple times I saw major problems at Estibot. “Bulk domain appraiser” gives not the same amount as single domain appraiser sometimes. Another very big problem is taken “TLDs” column which shows wrong information very often. After all these problems Estibot appraisal tool is not so good as it supposed to be, but still, it is a good tool to evaluate Your domain if You don’t have any idea what Your domain price should be. RATING: 4/5. It could be 5, but You have to correct price a little bit by Yourself and You don’t get the right information all the time, sometimes Estibot shows wrong information and You can’t see that without other tools.

What Is Domain Hijacking?

| DOMAIN NAME | March 29, 2011

posts-150x102

As you delve deeper into the world of making domain names, you are going to learn about the less pleasant aspects of the internet world such as cybersquatters, typosquatters and domain hijackers. Here we will focus on the latter with regards to their techniques, intentions and the ways you have to protect yourself from their shenanigans.

How Do Domain Hijackers Work?

Domain names always expire after a certain period of time and it is the owner’s responsibility to renew the registration. The hijackers can set up systems of software to figure out the exact moment that a registration has lapsed and buy it instantly, which is a completely legal move even though it is ridiculously annoying for those who are victims to it.

Another way that these people work their dark magic is to get your personal information and then pretend they are you and talk to the registrar. They convince the registrar to modify the personal information they have about you which then gives the hijacker control over your domain. This is a form of identity theft and the ability to fix the problem after the fact depends on certain factors.
